Sleep and Airway Management at Biological Dentistry of Southern California
At Biological Dentistry of Southern California in Irvine, evaluating and treating the airway is a key component of our holistic approach to oral and overall health. The airway plays a critical role in quality sleep, systemic health, and jaw function. During the initial comprehensive exam, patients are screened for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), TMJ disorders, and other airway concerns. If clinically indicated, an at-home sleep study may be recommended to gather data for diagnosis. The results are reviewed by a licensed sleep physician, and a tailored treatment plan is developed and implemented at our office.
We offer a range of biologically informed solutions for airway management and sleep-related disorders. For patients using a CPAP device, our therapies may reduce reliance on it by addressing the underlying structural and functional airway limitations. Treatments may include photobiomodulation laser therapy to support airway tissue health, myofunctional therapy to strengthen oral and facial muscles, laser-assisted tongue tie release (frenectomy), and custom oral appliances when clinically appropriate. Each patient’s treatment plan is personalized to achieve the best possible results for airway function, sleep quality, and systemic health.
For patients with a tongue tie (ankyloglossia), diagnosis may occur during the comprehensive exam or at an initial procedure. If indicated, the Fotona Laser is used for a frenectomy, which has been shown to improve tongue mobility, airway space, and tongue posture, contributing to better breathing, swallowing, and sleep. This minimally invasive approach supports rapid healing and aligns with our biologically focused dental philosophy.
By addressing the airway as part of the Swiss Efficiency Concept, Biological Dentistry of Southern California integrates airway optimization into the overall oral health plan. Proper airway management can support better sleep, reduce systemic stress, improve TMJ function, and enhance overall well-being.
