Tongue Tie Release
(Lingual Frenectomy)

in San Juan Capistrano

At Biological Dentistry of Southern California, we evaluate and treat ankyloglossia (tongue-tie), a condition that can affect oral function, breathing, sleep, and overall systemic health. Tongue-tie occurs when the lingual frenulum, the tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth, is unusually short or tight. Untreated tongue-tie can contribute to mouth breathing, snoring, TMJ tension, clenching or grinding of the teeth, poor tongue posture, speech difficulties, and compromised craniosacral function.

Clinical research supports tongue-tie release as a safe and effective intervention. A study published in Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology (August 2019) evaluated 348 patients who underwent lingual frenectomy combined with myofunctional therapy. Results demonstrated high patient satisfaction with functional and physical outcomes:

  • 78% reported improved nasal breathing and reduced mouth breathing

  • 77% noted decreased muscular tension

  • 73% experienced reduced snoring

  • 91% reported a reduction in clenching and grinding

At Biological Dentistry of Southern California, tongue-tie release is performed using a precision laser procedure. After local anesthetic is applied, the Fotona laser gently releases the restrictive tissue, improving tongue mobility, airway function, and oral posture.

Recovery is typically rapid, with mild soreness for 24–48 hours post-procedure. Patients are encouraged to follow post-operative exercises and myofunctional therapy to maintain optimal tongue function and breathing patterns.
